Meaning & Functions of the Human Respiratory System

The respiratory system's function is to allow gas exchange to all parts of the body. The human respiratory system can be divided into two functional zones – the conducting zone and the respiratory zone. In humans and other mammals, the anatomical features of the respiratory system include airways, lungs, and the respiratory muscles.

The conducting zone of the respiratory system includes nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles.

The respiratory zone is found deep inside the lungs where inhaled oxygen can be exchanged for carbon dioxide. It includes the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and the alveoli. Anatomically the respiratory system can be divided in to two main divisions – the upper respiratory tract and the lower respiratory tract.

The upper respiratory tract is located in the head and neck and consists of the nose, pharynx and the larynx.

The lower respiratory tract is located in the chest and is made up of the trachea, bronchial tree and the lungs.

The website for Human Biology has all the details about the respiratory system and its various related issues.
